I felt a tiny, sick twist in my stomach when she said that. I tried to hide it, though. I'd been through this. I could help. I sat at her table and frowned thoughtfully. "I don't think so," I said. "I mean, nothing comes to mind." I watched her face, then gently said, "Maybe she . . . went home. To where she's originally from." I hated to say it, but it would be better than if her friend had gotten hurt or lost, right?
